FOOTBALL

PERMITS TO PLAYERS.

The permit committee of the Victorian Foot-ball League had a long meeting last evening, at the Port Phillip Club Hotel. The principal appli-cation was by H. Gavin (formerly of Essendon), who played in Boulder City last season, and wished to play with Essendon this year. Gavin stated that he had been asked by several league clubs to play with them, and that, if one of them had got him a permanent billet, he would have accepted it. He had wished to play with Essendon, how-ever, but had never expressed his willingness to play for monetary considerations with any team He was closely questioned as to the reasons of his leaving Victoria, -and of his return to Mel-bourne. After a lorn; discussion the permit waa granted. The case of J. M'Kenne, under tímilar circumstances, was also considered at length, and M'Kcni-ie waa eventually granted a permit to play with Essendon. In the case of C. Clements (Bruns-wick to South Melbourne) and H. Laxton (West Melbourne to Essendon), the Victorian Football Association had refused clearances. The league, therefore, under the new rules, called on the asso-ciation, to show cause why permits should not be granted. The association declined to appear, and the cases were gone on with in their absence. Both permits were granted, the chairman (Mr. C. M.Hickey) remarking to Clements, "You have come from the Brunswick Club with an excellent character, and I trust you will do yourself justice with South Melbourne." The following permits were also granted;-O. 0'Com.ell, South Mel-bourne to Carlton; P. Pitt, Essendon Town to Carlton. In the coses of J B. Lawson (Wil-liamstown to CollIn|rwood),A. E, Legge (Williams-town to Es&cndon), R. Bovie (North Melbourne to Carlton), J. K. Stewart (North Melbourne to St. Kilda), tho Williamstown and North Melbourne clubs, having ntuecd the men clearances, are called on to show cause why the permits should
