In Investiture

In an impressive ceremony at Govern-ment House, Canberra, yesterday, the Governor-General, Sir William Slim, con-ferred various degrees of Her Majesty's Honours on leading citizens of Canberra

and Australia.

Three Canberra citizens were knighted.

The occasion was memor-able as it was the last investi-ture at which Sir William will represent the Queen in

Australia.

The following persons re-ceived honours:

K.C.M.G.: In recognition of his outstanding service as Roman Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane, especially in the field of education, TheMost Reverend Sir James Duhig.

In recognition of his out-standing service as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Western Australia, The Honourable Sir Albert Wolff.

K.B.E.: In recognition of his continued and outstand-ing service to the Common-wealth and commerce, Sir

John Allison.

In recognition of his out-standing service to Australia in engineering and in the metal industries, Sir Waiter

Bassett.

KNIGHT BACHELOR: In recognition of his outstand-

ing public service as Secre- tary, Department of Trade, Sir John Crawford.

In recognition of his out-standing public service as Commissioner of Taxation, Sir Patrick McGovern.

In recognition of his con-tinued and outstanding service to the Commonwealth and the dairy industry of Austra-lia, Sir Christopher Sheehy.

In recognition of his con-tinued and distinguished pub-lic service, Sir Arthur Tange.

In recognition of his ser-vice to commerce and to charitable organisations in Victoria, Sir Edgar Coles.

In recognition of his ser- vice as a councillor of the Melbourne City Council and as Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Councillor Sir Frederick Thomas.

vices to the community over

many years in association with a variety of organisa-tions in Queensland, Sir Leon

Trout.

In recognition of his ser-vice to commerce and in-dustry in South Australia, Sir Barton Pope.
