RRose, Hartwig Win U.S. Doubles Tennis Title BROOKELINE, Massachusetts, Sunday (A.A.P.): Mervyn Rose and Rex Hartwig to-day won the American national doubles teninis title. They defeated the veteran American pair, Gardner Mulloy and Bill Talbert, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Mulloy and Talbert did not have tile necessary speed to handle the Australians, who played a btilliant all-court game It was the. second time that Rose, has been in the winning pair In tie American doubles championship. Last year he paired with Vic iSeixas to defeat Frank Sedgman and Ken McGregor. Rose played superb tennis. He served four aces and won five games to love on his own service in the match which lasted 77 minutes. He was given great support by Hartwig, who served three

aces and won two love games on his own service. The Australians' win has once again dampened American optimism about winning the doubles in the Davis Cup. Mulloy and Talbert. following the defeat on Saturday of Vic Seixas and Tony Trabert, had been mentioned as the possible doubles combination in the forthcoming Davis Cup. Mulloy and Talbert had won the American title in 1942, 1945, 1946 and 1948. Mulloy, who is 39. had his ser

vice broken four times in the match. Talbert, who is 34, played well, but the Australians were quick enough and brilliant enough to take the advantage of the slightest lapse by the Americans. TIe Australians broke through Mulloy's service in the fifth game of the first set to win 6/4, but the Americans rallied in the second set to square the match with a 6/4 victory. They broke through Rose's service in the 10th game. Rose, to this stage, had not lost a point on his service. After this setback, the Australians dominated the rest of play to win the final two sets, 6/2, 6/4.
