HOW "LILI" WAS BORN

HOLLYWOOD.— Screen writer Helen Deutsch gives an insight on how actresses — like Leslie Caron for instance — get their big chance.

The petite writer, famed for such vigorous outdoor films as 'King Solomon's Mines,' decided she wanted to do a screenplay about a waif. "At the time all America's great screen stars were strong women such as Bette Davis or Barbara Stanwyck, domineering the men. Yet many of the great silent stars were the waif characters like Mary

Pickford and Janet Gaynor." She got the idea for a screenplay from a Paul Gallico short story and then looked around for her waif. "I had just about decided on Pier Angeli when I saw some rushes for 'An American in Paris.' "Here was a girl with a face like a chipmunk. I started writing for her.''
