ROCHESTER. - The duststorms experi- enced this year have blocked the western portion of the irrigation channels of the Campaspe Trust. Tenders were called for cleaning them a considerable time ago, but up the present the work has not been completed. Farmers along the channels cannot get a drop of water to irrigate their grass paddocksa, and by the time the con- tract is completed the water in the weir will be too low to run. - Mrs. Joyce died at Pan- noobamawm on Thursday, at the age of 93 years. The deceased lady was born in County Galway, Ireland, and arrived in Victoria in the early fifties, and had resided here almost continually since. With the exception of partial blindness, she retained her faculties right up to her illness 14 days ago. She left a large family, in- cluding 44 grandchildren and 60 great-
grandchildren. - The splendid rainfall of Friday will, with a few warm days, produce good feed for the stock, which will con- siderably lessen the demand for chaff. - A movement is on foot to petition the shire council to increase the rate, which is only 6d., so that an extensive drainage scheme may be undertaken in the town. The exist- ing system is exciting much unfavourable comment just now, on account of the out- break of typhoid and scarlet fever.

WODONGA-Messrs. J. Rowan P.M., H. Harkin, and G. Leighton, J.P.'s, on Thursday investigated a rather remarkable charge against two well known residents of Kiewa. The accused were two brothers, named John and George Hopgood, and they were proceeded against on the criminal sum- mons by Mounted-constable Downes for having on February 18, at Kiewa, killed two sheep, tho property of Joseph Coulston, with intent to steal the carcases. The ac- cused, in a statement made to Constable Downey, admitted having shot the two sheep, but claimed that they killed them under the impression that the sheep were put of a lot under offer to them by Mr.
S. Lovell-Hayes, who at the time resided at Huon-lane. At the close of the case Mr. Wilkins applied for a dismissal, urging that no jury would convict the accused; but the Bench , while observing that the case was not strong, felt justified in committing the accused for trial at Wangaratta on April 10. Bail was allowed, each of the accused in £25, and another of £50.
