RECORD OF NEW COMMISSIONER
Perth, July 26. — The Minister for Native Affairs, Mr. McDonald, con firmed yesterday the announce ment that the position of Com missioner of Native Affairs in Western Australia had been offer ed to Mr. S. G. Middleton. He said that Mr. Middleton was at present assistant director of the Papuan Department of External Affairs.
Mr McDonald said that Mr. Middleton had served under Sir Hubert Murray, a former Adminis trator of Papua, and his succes sor, Mr. Leonard Murray. He had had opportunities of making a wide and practical study of the native races and welfare, and pos sessed extensive field and adminis trative experience. Sir Hubert, under whom Mr. Middleton had received most of his training, was claimd to have been one of the tnree or four leading native ad ministrators produced in the Bri tish Empire. The Papuan district contained a native population of about 300,000.
