BOXING.
McGOWAN DEFEATS CULLEN.
"Jack" McGowan, the light-weight boxer, who has been absent from Melbourne for some months with Mr. Bland Holt's Dramatic Company, fought his first contest since his return at the Victoria- hall last evening, when he defeated "Ned" Cullen in 16 rounds. Mr. P. Rastow officiated as referee, and the men's weights were announced as each about 9st. -?lb. McGowan prevailed in the early part of the light, knocking down Cullen with a clean hit in the fourth round, and punishing him with severe body blows shortly afterwards. Cullen, however, made a remarkable recovery, and pressed McGowan until the 11th round, when he again assumed the lead. At the end of the next round a rush of Cullen's was met with a right swing on the jaw, which sent him down for nine seconds. He came up very weak at the next call, of time, and was immediately knocked out with a body
blow.
