ENEMY AIRSTRIPS

Tons of Bombs Dropped SOE, IN TIMOR, RAIDED

Somewhere in the South-West Pacific Area, Sept. 11.— Tons ol bombs were dropped on enemy airstrips at Langgoer, Letfoear, Toel and Faan in the Kai Islands by Australian and American manned Liberator heavy bombers at the wp.p.k-p.nri Allipri sf.vifrpc rm

Soe township in Timor made from North- West Australian bases almost simultaneously and includ ed R.A.A.F. personnel in Austra lian made Beauforts. Bombs from the Liberators scored hits among five unidenti fied Japanese aircraft on Langgoer strip which, together with Letfoear strip, was cratered. Many explo sions were seen and fires started in the raids on Faan and Toeal and direct hits were scored on four Toeal buildings. Black smoke rose to 4000 ft. after the Toeal raid. Two Liberators were holed by anti-aircraft fire but the casual ties were light and all the planes returned safely to base. Incendiary and fragmentation bombs were dropped from the Beauforts on Soe, a peacetime health resort for Koepang resi dents, and many fires were started. Direct hits were scored on build ings north-east of the main river bridge.
