FOOTBALL. Sunshine's Narrow Victory. A following containing numerous lady supporters journeyed to the South Brunswick oval where the locals met the North' Melbourne Laurels. Weather conditions were ideal. The rain of the previous evening had softened the soil to a nicety. The following represented Sunshine : Backs, Henderson, Cross, Carroll'; half-backs, Wunhym, "J. More, White; centres, Eason, Russell, Laughton ; half-forwards, Searle, Crick, Stock dale; forwards, L. esberg. Calendar, T. Moore ; followers, A.' More,Robins; rover, Coles umpire," Lowell. 'Mas son doing duty with the military was unavailable, North won the toss, thus availing themselves of the'use of the moderate breeze. Lowell bounced the ball, thus setting the, season in full swing. In less than two minutes North caught ouri reiable backs nap ping and scored an. easy goal. The performance was repeated. Sunshine then livened up, and defied their op ponents to cross the centre line for several minutes,' but all they could manage were points, Some: ,easy chances for goal, were missed. In S'fact our forwards wei-e unconsciously ,r'but actually playing against another. North by concerted, play piloted ano ther sixer. Roy Crick *then marked and found the big opening on two suc cessive. occasiops. :Quarter . time scores-North Laurels, 3.0; Sunshine, 2,4. Although the scores were slightly in North's favor, Sunshine had the best of the play'in thiesecond quar ter, but the fodrwards continued their utterly disgraceful exhibition. School boy marks were missed ; shots in front landed no wlhre near the four uprights; B3arrackers - roired: their wrath. Eason: 'moved " forward - to remedy matters,:, North' made much better use of their opportuiities.' Half time scores"-1-orth "5.3 to 2.6. Dur ing the interval the captain. addressed the team in .no, uncertain` iilanner, singling ouit the forwards in' particu lar. "Now come on I" said Eason; ." this game must be ourasl", The con 4equence was -North failed to score a single poinrt ini thi, tirdequarter. The play hovered-in:,thevicinity of North's goals practically the whole time. Point after point su?ely disheartened our backs, who were defending like Trojans, At last Lesberg managed a sixer, followed by Tommy Moore, whi9h gave us the lead. for the first

timle ,by three points: Three quarter time-Sunshine, '1.12 to 5:3: With .', ! ,-r iiiHts dividing them, aitd .ast(ilt breeze :to contend with, ial;tei's okibd anything but bright for Sun.hinie. IHowever, the last qualrter was ex hilarating in tl?e, extremoe. Unpcr turbed by the fall of a heavy shower, both- sides battled strenuously, first one then the other taking the lead un til Tommy Moore settled the i.sue with the best goal of the day one minute before time, thus giving Sun shine a thoroughly deserved victory by a small margin of three points. Final-Sunshine, 7.15 to 8.6. Goal-kickers-Crick (2), T. Moore (2), Searle, Laughton, Lesberg. The game proved clearly the want of two good forwards. Patterson, a small man, h~ho kicked 82 goals for Mornington last year has secured his permit for Sunshine. He' will surely be tried out to-day. .Alex More and Jiker R"obins de serve the'palm: for; the best: men' on the side. They followyed'most of, the game. Their staying power in the final quarter was creditable. 'Lautgh-. - ton was not at home on the wing, but his play half-forward justified the change made by the captain. Eason besides doing some useful •vork infused . the spirit that- wins" m matches. In Charley Lee, who. migrated from Yarraville to the Laurels, Roy Crick had something to beat in the air. Nevertheless he was easily, the pick of the forward division. Thli backs un doubtedly saved the issuie, J. More, Wunhym and Carroll being.repeatedly in evidence. Coles and Tommy .Moore strove hard for victory. Jack O'Brien's brother, Darey,' has cleared from Footscrayto Sunshine.' ? He will probably play on forward line to-day. A welcome return is that' of Reg. Barclay to.: tho -.committee. To-day we meet South Melbourne at Sunshine. South alwaya puts a good side in the fi6ld; With our im proved side a ding dong tussle. is ex pected. The team 'will appear 'else where in this issue.
