FOOTBALL. Season Opens To-day Ideal weather prevailed on Satur-day   last until 3 p.m. When play   comnmenced a light drizzling rain set in, there being just sufficient for the turf to become slippery, with the ad- ded consequence of a semi-greasy ball. Sunshine seniors journeyed to the   Albert ground on St. Kilda road, where they were met by the Melbourne League juniors. The arena and sur roundings were most picturesque. The following players represented Sun

shine :--Backs, Masson, Henderson' Robbins; half-backs, J. More, Wun hym, Carroll ; centres, Peterson, Rus sell, Laughton.; half-forwards, Eason' Crick, Searle ; forwards, E, Richards' Stockdiale, Calender ; followers' McPherson, Ladner; rover, T. Moore' Melbourne fielded their best eighteen' whilst our team was weakened by the absence of four regulars. Garbed in their new uniform they evidently pleased Eason, the coach, who jocu arly remarked, " Well, if we can't play football, we certainrly look res ectable." Our president, Mr I. Thompson, spoke a few appropriate words to the players, appealing for friendly spirit-and co-operation in play if they did that, continued the speaker, he was sufficiently optimistic to say the team defeating Sunshine would realise they had been playing. The election of Eason and Searle, as Captain and vice-captain, was formally included. Prior to going out Eason gave the players some useful advice. The 1st quarter was evenly con-

tested, but Melbourne made the most of their opportunities. Quarter time scores were Melbourne 2.2 to 2 points. The second quarter delighted our supporters, but poor shooting left Mel- bourne still in the asceundancy. Half time-Melbourne, 5.4, to 1.7. Up till now the home side marked and handled the wet ball much better, but the outstanding and appreciative feature of Sunshine team was their display of team work. Their passing on, hand-ball, etc., means with a dry day some brilliant victories in store -provided the other fellows don't do the trick better. Eason took ad vantage of the interval to point out the proper methods. At half-time McPherson, Stockdale and Peterson were spelled to give Coles, Donald and Mannix (a recruit from Iona) a try out. The second half was a surprise for Melbourne, particularly the last quarter, when Sunshine completely out-classed their opponents. When time was up Melbourne were one point in front. They were allowed to go another five minutes with the final result-Melbourne, 9.9 to 7.13. The game was played in good spirit, repre- sentatives from both sides congratu- lting each other at the finish. Goal kickers for Sunshine -- Coles (2), Searle, T. Moore, Laughton, Crick and Donald. Owing to the bad state of the ground it would be unfair to criticise any player for the try-out purpose. Those who were most con spicuous were-T, Moore. Coles, Car roll, Masson, Wunhym, Richards and Searle. The side as awhole displayed wonderful improvement. Eason's theory lecture on the black board has already showed its effect in the genuine game. It is proposed to con tinue the same during alternate weeks. Whilst I am not prepared to expose any of the secrets, all the same our supporters should watch the sys tematic moves of the team in the com ing season. To-day we commence in real earnest, when we meet a strange team known as the North Melbourne Laurels. The game will be played at the old Brunswick ground which can be reached by the Elizabeth-st. tram, alighting at the- Sarah Sands Hotel, or better still take train direct for Royal Park. Let there be a good following to barrack the team on to victory. The personnel of the team will appear elsewhere in these columns. Players please take note. The captain is desirous that all players catch the 1.30 train from Sunshine when play ing away. This will he says, give   him a chance to prepare and instruct the men before taking the field. SLSO,
