LANDSBOROUGH. (From our own Correspondent.) Another pioneer of this district, in the person of Mr Francis Matthews, passed away on Sunday, 6th inst. The late Mr Matthews was a native of Dub- lin, Ireland, and previous to coming to Australia held a position in the Cus- toms Department, Dublin. After be- ing in the country for a while -he ac- quired property at Joel Joel, and was noted for being a hard working and energetic man. He was held in high   esteem by a large circle of friends, and all those with whom he came into con- tact spoke highly of his honorable and trustworthy character. The deceased had been ailing for some considerable time, and in view of this fact and his extreme age of 88 years, his death was not altogether unanticipated. After disposing of his property some few years ago the deceased came in to Landsborough, and lived at the resi- dence of Mrs Armarant. His nearest relatives in Victoria are Mr Ernest Matthews, of Crowlands, and a cousin, a barrister and solicitor, and he also has relatives in Ireland. The remains.of the deceased were interred in the Landsborough Cemetery, the Rev. Fa- ther Waldron officiating at the grave side. Mr C. P. Aston had charge of the mortuary arrangements.
