Obituary, - THE LATE MR. JOHN COFFEY. Our Kewell correspondent write5 :-The funeral of the late Mr. John Coffey. of Kewell, took place on Tuesday last. A great number of people followed his re mains to the grave in the Murtoea Ce metery;. There vre over 60 vehicles, and a number of horsemen. There could not have been less than three hundred peo pie. The Rev. Father O'Brien, of War racknabeal, assisted by the Rev. Father Meade; of Horsham, conducted the bu" rial service. The late Mr. Coffey's health had been failing for a long time. About two weeks ago he went to Melbourne for the benefit of his health, but hera pitly got worse, and died on the 9th February at St. Elin's pirivate hospital. The collin containing Iris mortal re mains came by tirain on Monday, end was taken to the Roman CatholiC Cha pel. Murtoa, where it remaiue-.I till the time for interment, 3 o'clock. Many nor rowilng friends of the deceased entered the chapel duing the day and engaged in prayer. The late Mr. John Colley was born .in Limerick, Ireland. He came out to V'ictoria over 40 years ago. Shortly after he came he was engaged in cart ing gooes from Melbourne to the Wim mera with a waggon and team of sgr see, and returned with wool from the sheep stations. About thirty-three years ago li and hIs -brothei. the late Mi chael Coffey, selected land at Sewell. They were among the pioneers in , the early days of land settlement on the Wimmera. He was very successful as a Tarmer and hotel keeper, was a very shrewd -business man, and was very for tunate in all his speculations. He own ed-a very large extent of first-clas land and was very wealthy. He was a man whose word was his bond-; ie was cha ritably disposed; and gave to all deser ring objects he was a glotd supporter of the church, and gave liberally to it. He married Clltherine Alm?d d. - who sur vives, He leaves five- sons and - thre daughters to mourn their loss. Mach sympathy is expressed for Mrs. Coffey in her deep sorrow, and for the family in- their sad bereavement. He 'attained the: age of 63 years. The maf,' friends of Mr. McRae, Ste wart, of the Lands Office; Horehaoi. will regret to learn that -his mother died at her home, William-street, BeHchworth, on Monday. Mr. and -Mrs. Stewart had residet in Beechworth for 'many years., Mr. Stewart having heen in charge of the L?cls Office there .until he resigned. Mr. McRae Stewart hurried home when he heard of -his mother's illness, nbut she had passed away before he reached home. Mrs. Stewart was 06 years of age. • • - " Mr .r . J. E.
