OBITUARY COLES- A pioneer resident of Sta- well in the person of James Coles died on Saturday evening at the advanced age of 91 years. He was born in the vicinity of the G.P.O. Melbourne, in the early days of settlement in Vic- toria, and some time later went to the Avoca district, where he spent his boy- hood days. He went to Stawell in his teens, and some years later was mar- ried to Miss Louis Gilham. For a time they settled at Fyan's Creek but afterwards he returned to Stawell where he had resided for the past 76 years. His wife predeceased him by 16½ years. He was a good all-round sport, and at one time represented the Stawell Cricket Club in matches with outside teams. He is survived by a family of seven, viz., Richard (Sta- well), Emma (Mrs W. Bowtell, Hall's Gap), George (Stawell), Henry (late A.I.F., Preston), Frederick (Stawell), and Harriet (Mrs.F. Ormoston, Sunshine).
