An Early Sorrow.

(See illustration on tais page.) His cheek is wan, his eyes are dim,

His hand rests slackly on his knee, His merry comrade's careless glee

Awakes no answering smile from him. , In ithe sweet spring of youth and joy,

"When most life's morning skies are fair,

What grievous loss, whait bitter care , Saddens the bright face of the boy?

What are his woes, too young ito prove

Of cruel time the whip and scorn,

Or know the torments that are born Of merit spurned or misprized love? Nay, let the simple truth appear;

Tnwlse, as other mortals are.

He 'tried to smoke that rank cigar, And he ia feeling awful queer I
