Law Library.-On Saturday a meeting of the legal profession, called by the Attorney General by advertisement, was held, to take steps to form a law library, in connection with the Supreme Court, open to all the profession. A committee was appointed, consisting of bar- risters and solicitors, to consider and report on the best means of carrying out the object. Abridged from the Empire, May 6.

Committals f.iR Libel.-On Saturday, at the re-hearing of the charge of libel, Deniehy v. the Venerable Archdeacon M'Encroe and Michael D'Aroy, the Sydney police bench committed the two defendants for trial at the Central Criminal Court, but admitted them to bail. The Vene- rable Archdeacon is the proprietor, and Mr. D'Aroy the publisher, of the Freeman's Jour- nal, in which an article was published on the 3rd' of March last, reBpeoting a trial for libel just then concluded, in which Mr. Deniehy waB the successful plaintiff. In this article Mr. Deniehy, under the name of Mistber O'Dinny, was held np to ridicule. The Venerable Arch- deacon, before leaving the court, made a written declaration that he never saw the article before publication, or kuew of it, and that bad he known he would not have allowed it to be pub-

lished.

Conversion of Debbntures.-The Austra- lian Joint Stock Bank offers to make cash ad- vances against Government Debentures con- signed to their Loudon agents for sale. This plan not only alfords to holders the advantage of having their debentures submitted for reali- zation in the largest and best market in the world, but, as we understand that the advances will also have the benefit of the current ex-

change on London (2 per cent, premium) in ad- dition, it follows that if the debentures only realize in London tbe same price per cent, at which they are at present saleable here, an ope- ration of the above nature secures to the seller at least £l 16s. per cent, more than if disposed of at this market, together with tbe interest ac- cruing on them during their transit to London -say about four months, or equivalent to If per cent.-making a total of about 3¿ per cent. -Empire, Aug. 6.

Melancholy Accident.-Yesterday week, a person named John Minehan, well known on the Lachlan for many years as a sporting character, was killed by a fall from a horse. An inquest was held over his remains, on the following day before Helenos Scott Esq. coroner of the dis- trict, when the following particulars transpired in evidence. Deceased, who was in the Bervice of Mr. Cummings, bad been ont on the run to searoh for a working bullock, in company with Mr. Lawrence Lynch, and when cantering homewards, in attempting to avoid a tree, his horse took one side and he the other, thus bringing bim in violent contact, and hurling him to the ground with considerable velocity. After about four hours spent in excruciating agony he expired. A verdict ot accidental death was found.- Bathurst Free Press, Aug. 4.

Th« Turon.-There are no accounts of any considerable findings, and no place can be said to be overstocked; indeed there is room and soope for thousands at many points up and down the river, where, with good management and industry, a comfortable competence can be obtained, bat impatience and indecision have been ruling characteristics with too many of our diggers, and failure of disappointment the natural results. From want of rain Wattle Flat and other inland diggings suffer much, while the present dryness of the weather is most favourable for all the river workers.-Bathurst Free Press, Avg. 4.

The Weather.-A complete change has taken place in the weather since our last notice. For some time past we have been visited by se- vere and continuous frosts, broken only by a cloudy atmosphere now and again, portending ram, but terminating again in frosts. The plains begin to look parched, and the crops around Bathurst require moisture. August with ns is generally a wet month, and its aconstomed visitatious would at preseut be extremely wel- come. No complaints aB yet however have reached us from the bush. Partial showers have fallen in various directions, more particularly at the bases of the various ranges by which these districts are intersected, and in such situations the ground is sufficiently moist for agricultural purposes. Snow has fallen in small quantity within the past few days, and on Monday last lay for some time on Mount Victoria.-Bathurst Free Press, Aug. 4.

The Lachlan.-The rains of the current winter have, as often happens, been partial, and nowhere has this partiality been more obvious than on the Laohlan. Upon the upper portion of the river, where there has been little rain, feed is extremely scarce, whilst lower down, where it is plentiful, there is abundance of grass, and horses and cattle are doing well. A large quantity of grain has been put in abont Cowra and the surrounding eountry, and with a mode- rately favorable season, there will be no scarcity of the first necessary of existence-bread.
