HE'S THE WHOLE WORKS. Here is a story in an American paper about a man in Kent who is a whole gasworks. The man is Arthur Fisher and his one-man gasworks is at Goudhurst, Kent. He supplies 3000 people with gas, besides producing 3000 gallons of tar and many tons of coke. The works, hidden away behind old cottages and woods, produces 15,000 cubic feet of gas every day, and Mr. Fisher shovels the raw coal into re- torts, keeps the furnaces going, main tains all the machinery, and, to fill in his time, acts as repair man and an- sweres queries. In addition, he rakes the coke out of the retorts, breaks it up, washes it, shovels it into sacks, and delivers it, on a little hand-cart, to the villagers. If a customer's supply breaks down, the gasworks man leaps on to the gas works bicycle and pedals off to put things right. And if the gasworks sud- denly break down while the engineer is at home - three miles away - he jumps on the bicycle again and hurries to put things right. But Mr. Fisher does not let running a gasworks run away with all of his time. He has a garden at the back of the works where he grows tomatoes. Teacher: "Have you heard of Julius Caesar?" Pupil: "Yes, sir." "What do you think he would be do- ing now if he were alive?"" "Drawing the old-age pension, sir." Argument with a woman is a case of: "He came. He saw. He con- curred!"
