. LONGWOOD. Football. Once again we are on the eve of the grand winter'game. Lougwood hopes 9 to put in a good team: to-morrow against ýEuroa:'- The teami is.to be picked to-night and the names of the players posted up in conspicuous places in the township. Death- of Mrs. Maxfield. M?rs Mlaxfield, a very old and hon ored resident of Longwood,passed away last Saturday morning. The deceased lady, "who was .87 years of age, was well-known and a favorite with every one for miles around. Mrs. axfileld d Was a native of Hampshire, and came i, out to Victoria iii the late forties,when a she married, the laie Mr. James Max ii field,;who for many years controlled I large flour-milling interestsiýi:Kil more, i Seymour, Broadford,'and Beechworth; subsequently settling in Longwood The deceased lady leaves many well known relatives in this and other districts " to . mourn her loss. The military: bill, held: under the auspices of-the A.L.H.I and rifle club. -Fridry-evenin-, proved igreat success. The committee spared no pains to en-h s. sure, same. The-hall never looked s better, 100 Union Jacks, crossed rifles t and bayonets, and a ;little greenery e effectively displayed.presented a'strik ing appearance. The .floor was in perfect order, the music: (Chandler's. Band) eplendid,ikhdtho40 o couplea who danced besides many'visitores, had a most enjoyable time.. Stating The committee' of the :Lon~wood AMechanics' Institute' introduced skat ing `on' Thursday riight;,when -a large number. atteiided,: anid a pleasant evening: spent. It ..was 7 originally intended- to commence to-n;glit 'but as there were too many other things on, it was decided to open a day earlier. A.L.H. The Light Horse troop had a big day on Wednesday. The troop mustered on the Sydney road at old Longwood, and under Sgt. Kong Meng, moved off as an advance party at. 10.15 p.m. Then, in open formation, went on till it reached the top of Burns' Gap, where it was fired on by what turned out to be a small party, quickly the advance party got into action,and compelled the attacking force to retire. A most ex citing chase took place, resulting in the Longwood troop capturing the whole   of the enemy. The men proceeded to   Mr. Charlton's farm, where a competi   tion by the No. 1 Squadron took place. Head-and-shoulder targets and hurdles were erected, and a team of 12 chosen horsemen under Capt. Maygar VC contested for the regimental prize,   which is £10, and the right to compete   at Williamstown in the State competi   tion for the Prince of Wales Trophy.   The contest proved full of happiness   and excitement. The Adjt. Capt   Sergeant acted as judge. The points re scored were not made known.   Rainfall. We seemed to have received our full at sharoof the rain r.ecorded last Saturday, at 2:! points being registered. The weather looks promising for a further K fal', and it is to be hoped that it will or come soon. st
