OBITUARY-Another well known resi- dent has been removed by the hand of the Grim Destroyer. We allude to Mr. Ben- jamin Edrich who passed quietly away at his residence this morning. Deceased was widely known, having been identified with hoel business for many years and a more genial host it would be difficnlt to meet. The funeral is fixed for Sunday. " RTEPixxL.-The council haTe no option but to accept the resignation, and the racancr must date from the dar the document was handed in. A new Mayor mar he elected at any time. Ho LIDn .-- Saturday haing been found an inconvenient day for a holiday the business people of the town have agreed to close their establishments on Monday and so admit of the date of the founding of the colony being duly im pressed upon the minds of the residents. Owing to this, Captain Footeelsewhere intimates that the half-day parade will take place on Monday instead of Satur day. The firing for the Pioneer Medal must take place to-morrow, as one of the stipulations of the donor was that it be shot for on the 19th November. (hsDEr.-The local cadet corps we understand had what is known as a good time" at Gasterton yesterday, but we are compelled to hold over particulars. In connection with the cadets we may mention that a communication has been receirved to the effect that the extra rifles required to complete the complement of the corps will be forwarded very shcrty. QcuarTELLY Gocars.-To-morrow is the date fixed for holding the Quarterly Courts in Portland, but we understand there is no business in any of them. OcaWooL STE.xaans-We are advised by Messrs. W. P. Anderson and Co. that the Golf of Venice, the second ocean going steamer to load wool at Portland for London direct this season. will bein this bay on Monday and ready to com mence loading on Tuesday morning. The wool stores in the town are crowded, and if only to make room for wool to dump the arrival of the Gulf of Venice will be welcomed. BazaRS Aso BaL..-About 30 ladies met at the Town Hall on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the advisability of holding a bazaar and ball in the new Orderly Room at an early date to secare funds for the militia band. Captain Foote explained that if the band was to be maintained funds were ,necessary, and be thought the method suggested a capital one. After some quiet dis cussion, during which the idea of a bazaar and ball met with a welcome re ception, it was duly proposed, seconded and unanimously carried, that such be held during the month of February 1888 and that all the ladies present be ap pointed members of the general com mittee. An executive committee was also appointed, and Mrs. Collier induced to undertake the duties of secretary. BowLsc.-- Although the weather was not very favorable last Saturday, a few of the enthusiasts turned out and had a very good game. There has been both drying wind and sun this week, enabling the care taker to get on the green and work it and members to play some very enjoyable games. Should: the present weather hold till to morrow afternoon a good game may be looked for. A match will take plae to morrow between sides chosen by Doctor Brewer (President) and Mr. Lyne (Vice President), and as it will be well to play the regulation time-two hours and a half -members should he on the green as soon after 3 o'clock as possible so that play may be commenced not later than 1alf-past three. There are several good bowlers amongst the visitors now in town who have added zest to the game during the week. The com mittee cordially invite them take part in to-morrow's mateh. Several ladies have also gaaced the green with their presence; it need hardly be added that they areas cordially invited as the opposite sex.
