India Turns to Dried Potatoes. Orders for nearly 3,000 tons of de hydrated potatoes have so far been placed in India. Bulk manufacture is now being carried out by several firms all over India. In recent weeks alone 16 new factories have been placed on the list and given ed Sucational orders, or in some cases contracts, for the supply of dehy drated potatoes. Directors of Ag riculture, Controllers of Supplies and representatives of various firms have met to consider problems arising from the increased demand for dried potatoes for the Defence Services. Among subjects discussed were ways and means of increasing the area un de' cultivation, the possibility of oh taining the support and assistance of organised industries, such as tea, jute, and sugar, for the manufacture of dehydrated potatoes ; improve ment of methods of manufacture and the price of the raw material.
South Africa--Army Repair Shop. -Dr. H. J. van de Bijl, Director General of War Supplies in South Africa, reviewing the development of the Union's war production in the past year, disclosed that South Af rica is now an important "repair shop" for the armies of the Middle East and already many tons of ur gently-needed spares and replace ment parts for aircraft, tanks and armoured vehicles have been exped itiously made and flown to the north. Even by the end of June last, South Africa's production of armoured cars was well into four figures. The own needs, was able to meet calls from the Middle East for aerial bombs, thus saving shipping space between Britain and this theatre of war. South Africa has been deliv ering infantry mortars at a high rate for more than a year. ooo0
