OBITUARY The death of Mrs. Lear on Decem- ber 17th, at her daughter's resi-   dence, Branxholme, removes an other of the fast diminishing band of pioneers. The deceased lady -relict of the late Mr. Benjamin Lear-was a native of Edinburgh, and came to Portland just 50 years ago in the Julia Percy, on which her husband served for many years. She saw this boat built, and knowing one of the directors, she was offered passage to Australia, being ad-   vised to leave her home land on ac- count of ill health. She was in   business in Portland as a confec- tioner for years, and, strange to say, never removed from Bentinck street. Firstly she occupied prem- ises on Yankee Doodle corner- since demolished, later removing to Must's old building (now owned by Mr. H. F. Down), and again to Mrs. Fisher's. On relinquishing busi- ness Mr'. and Mrs. Lear and family lived in Bentinck street south, where she remained in retirement for 25 years. A grown-up family -all of whom are well and favor- ably known in the district--remain to mourn the loss of a devoted and loving mother. The funeral took place on Monday, the remains being interred alongside those of her late husband in the South cemetery. Another old identity of the dis- trict-where she was born-has passed away in the verson of Mrs. A. Findlay, sister of Mrs. A. Keiller, of' Hurd street. An old and highly respected resi- dent has pasesd away at Heywood in the person of Mrs. Hugh Canter on, sen., who died at the residence of her son, Mr. H. A. Cameron, on Thursday .last at the age of 75 years. Mrs. Cameron was highly esteemed by all who knew her. She leaves two sons-Mr. Allan Cameron and Mr. Bruce Cameron. The re mains were interred in the Heywood cemetery on Saturday afternoon, the burial service being conducted by the Rev. Hovenden, of the Pres byterian Church, the mortuary ar rangements being carried out by Mr. W. A. Jarrett, of Portland.
