Obituary. MR R. HICKLETON. A pioneer . of the district, Mr. Robert Hickleton, passed peacefully away at Koroit on Wednesday, at the age of 86 years. He was one of the diminishing band of people who came out to Australia and be gan its development in an unassum ing way. Landing as a very little boy at Portland. in 1854, with his parents, from the sailing ship Old 1 Ellen, he travelled with his parents 1 to the then little known country inland to Mount .Talbot. Later IM:r. "Hickletoif joined the staff, of the":Portland "Guardian," where he t became an expert compositor. On: the same staff was the lateMr. Ben jamin Hoare, who later was destin'ed to beconie ? one 'of Australia's fore-. ' most journalists. Leaving '-Port- ii land, Mr. Hickleton followed 'up newspaper -and printing work in the' office of 'the Wasrrnambool '"Ex aminer," 'where he remained for t some years. Printers in the early f days were ' prone to migrate from one office to another, anid from one town to another, for again Mr. I Ilickleton carried on his trade at c Portland, this tinie with a news- i paper called the "Mir ror."" Subse- i quently he removed to Port Fairy, 'r and remained as a valued member t ,1f the "Gazette" staff for 29 years f without a break. He retired for t a time to Koroit, -but at various . times was associated with the gen-,1 eral printing . department in the' ' "Spectator" 'office. - He retired l from active work some years ago, : and three months ago went to live I with a married dauighter at Koroit. `' In his younger and virile days, Mr.' Ilickleton was a keen :athlete, and } was regarded as a pedestrian out of ' the ordinary. He was also a cap- ( able cricketer, bowling . being his c forte. He was an' active :meimbor I of the. Port: Fairy Bowling.Club, y winning three' chanmpionshi?si, and t -was also a life honorary member of 1 'the HlamiltonlBowling" Club." A widow, three .sons and two daugh- '? ters survive--Messrs. Harry, Her- - bert and Leonard, of Hamilton, and a Mrs. R. 'Leishman (Koroit), and 1 Mrs. Wix (Sydney.) The' burial( took place' at the Tower Hill'cemnie-.. tory, the coffin-bearers being the?:1 three soa i and son-in -law (Mr.'-"I Leishman) . of deceased.-"Specta-' I tor." ' Another' old Portland native, in. the person of Mrs. Porter, relict of. E the - ite .Mr.'- Joseph Porter, has linassed ..away., The de ceased lady, ...who, was the 'i third daughter of the late Mr. Rob- I eirt Henderson, was born in 1844, a . i few years after the Hentys settled I on Portland Bay. She was mar ried early 'n .wodianhood, ind lslhe t and her husband had resided in' the sc town ever 'since. Mr, Porter pre deceased his wife ' little over a I year ago, and there `were no child- , ren of the marriage.- The late i 'Mrs. Porter :was deeply attached to i lher home,' for a long time living in -( retirement., With her 'husband, 'j she was a devout':nenbher.a nn regu- i Jar' worshippei.: at St:` Stephen's s Chu!lrch.. ?
