OBITUARY. x -------x-- Mr. J. H. Porter. The death of Mr. Joseph'- Henryi Porter took place at his residence, Gawler Street, on Monday. The de ceased had reached the ripe old age of 90, and was wonderfully' pre served, up to the time of his death being in possession' of all his facul ties. He was born inEngland and came to Victoria 77 years ago, the majority of which he 'resided .in Portland, where he conducted a cab inet maker's business in Bentinck street in' the premise's now occupied by Toye. Bros. He was a' skilled tradesmian and was noted for his' fine workmanship. At the age of '30 he married Miss Sarah Herbortson, a native of'Portlanid, and a-member of the highly respected and well.knbwn Herbertson family of West Portland. There were no children of the mar riageo. ''The funeral -will' take place to-morrow afternoon 'at 2.30.. The .death of Mr. Jack, Hirth has occasioned wide spread: sorrows am ongst his numerous !friends, patitcu larly 'at the 'Dartmoor en'd, where for many years Jack was' a prominent figure. He was a noted bike rider, and was also known .for his abnormal strength,. ?it : being:stated that he could do a day's work equal to any three men. .Towards the end, it was the inactivity after a strenuous life that upset him, and'war injuries ul timately: sealed -the 'issue. Jack will' be remembered for his good-heaited. ness and sympathy for others. " He leaves behind ~a cherished name, and also goes over the Divide as one who inade, the- supreme' sacrifice-nothing greater.
