WILL ATTEMPT RECORD FLIGHT TO ENGLAND. Sydney. Airmen to Depart on 25th March. SThe Shell Company has received idvice that the two Sydney airmen, Messrs.. -David Smith and W. M. Shiers, will leave Wyndham on a flight to. England on the 25th inst., Iitl will attempt to break the pres ent record of 13 days. Their ma.' chine, ai Ryan monoplane, "The City of Sydney," is fitted with p 220 h.p. *Wright monoplane engine, and is specially fitted to carry 100 gallons of spirit. This will enable them to .have. a flying range of 131 hours, annd:to make possible hops of 12,000 .miles between re-fuelling. The Shell Company has laid tlown supplies of spirit and oil at Batavin, Singapore, Bangkok, Akyab, Alliaha biad, Karachi, Jask, Basra, Itamli, Boen'gshasi, Khoms, and Rome. Both Experienced Flyers. The two flyers are both well known in. Australian aviation circles. Mr. David Smith is recognised by the New South Wales Aero Club as be iing' one of their best club trained pilots, and has for some time flown his own Westland Widgeon and the :Ryan monoplane owned by the New South Wales Airways Ltd., of which company he is a director. Mr. Shiers has been connected with avi-: ation since his flight with the late Sir Ross Sinith, and'is considered to be one of the best mechanics in New South. Wales. Strip maps of the route over which the Ryan monoplane will fly have been generously supplied .by Flight' Lieut. Moir, who last year nlade the flight with Flying Officer Owen in a Vickers Vellore,- and,the Shell Comn pany: have carried out investigations of the. nerodromes and emergency landing grounds over the route. SShould the -flight to England be ,successful,', it is the intention of :Messrs. Smith' and Shiers to return :to"i'Australia in the Ryan machine; over a slightly different route.
