THE KING'S NAVAL FORCES. - Tuesdav's "Argus" s-ys :---All the ships. officers, and men of the Aus tralian rnavy yesterday became part and parcel of the King's Naval Forces, and will now move and act entirely as the British Admiralty may decide. but, of course.with the full knowledge of the Common wealth Government. In time of war divided control of the navy would be madness. The sea is all one, and to retain command is the first duty of every Imperial Minis try. In a crisis like the present a world-wide movement of warships may be tiecessary for carrying out, the Admiralty's general plan of operations; and Mr Churchill and his advisers can now, without let or hind rance, work out their schemes with all the naval resources of the Empire Provisions for such a contingency was made in the Commonwealth Naval Defence Act; and immed iately a state of war was proclamed between Great Britian and Germany Government and people alike realis ed that the time had come to'effect to it. Not only- so. but we are de lighted to have it in our power to give the help which our ships can render to the great Imperial force. MEMBEtnls of the local branch of the A.W.N.L. will observe that Mrs Hope, member of the executive council of the league, will deliver an address,Mrs Moss being unavoid ably prevented from visiting Port land on this cccasion. SCOTT'S PICTURES attracted a well filled house at the Library Hall last night, and those present were given a very pleasing and instruc tive evening. The evening opened by the singing of the "National Anthem," followed by "Rule Brit tannia," both being most enthus. iastically rendered. This was fol lowed by tile display of the words "Good Luck to the Boys in Navy Blue who are leaving Portland at their country's call. This also met with an enthusiastic welcome, and followed by volleys of "For they are jolly Good Fellows." After the enthusiasm had somewhat abated, the programme of the evening was proceeded with. Vocal and musical items were given by Mr R. Howell, the accompaniments being in the capable hands of Miss Jackman. Their Majesties the King and Queen appeared in one of the pictures, which those present at once recog nised by cheers. The whole even ing was thoroughly enjoyed.
