What Was lt ?
On Sunday night last, just before midnight, quite a number of resudents of Penrith were startled by hearing some mysterious noise -resembling either a muffled explosion or a subterranean thunder-like noise, accompan- ied by an earth agitation, which made the houses tremble. Many persons who had retired for the night were awakened, and,
becoming seriously alarmed, got out of their beds and ran outside to ascertain the nature of the shock ; but as nothing fur- ther was heard or felt the alarm subsid- ed, and conjectures were manifold us to what had caused it. Several persons who were on their way home late on Sunday night, hearing a rushing rumbling noise, which appeared to come from the sky, they looked up and beheld a meteor coming from the direction of Glenbrook, and mak- ing in a direct line with High-street. They distinctly state they saw the burst- ing of the meteor which caused the ex- plosive-like noise, and felt the trembling of the earth under them.
