COMTE AND COMTESSE DE CHAM- BORD.
The Comte de Chambord, Henri Charles Ferdinand Marie Dieu -Donne D'Artois, head of the elder branch of the Bourbons, born in Paris 29th September, 1820, is the son of Charles Ferdinand D'Artois, Duke de Berri, who was assassinated in March, 1820, and of the Princess of the two Sicilies, the famous Duchess de Berri. He was bap- tised with great pomp in water brought
from the Jordan by Chateaubriand. "The child of miracle," as he was called, received the title of Comte do Chambord from the castle of that name, which was bought for him by public sub- scription. Although Charles X. soon after the outbreak of the revolution of 1830 re- solved to abdicate in his favor, and in pre- sence of the troops assembled at Ram- bouillet made a proclamation under the title of Henry V., the count was compelled to quit the country. In 1S46 he married the Princess Maria Theresa, eldest daughter of the
Duke of Modena. They have no children, and it appears probable that the count will be the last of the elder branch of the Bourbons. Recently the Monarchists of Franco have been indulging in the prospect of his restora- tion to the throne, but the recent letter in which he announced his determination to abide by the principle of divine right, and by the white flag, as its symbol, and to concede nothing to the spirit and exigen- cies ot the times, have disillusionised even the most ardent of his adherents. The Opinion Nationale publishes a very curious
communication in reference to the legiti- macy of the Count's birth. It states that his father, the Duke de Berri, was married and had a wife living at the time when he espoused the Princess of Naples, who be came the Count's mother. If, as is stated, the Duke de Berri married in London a lady named Brown, he committed bigamy in marrying again while his first wife was still alive, and the offspring of the second mar- riage are consequently illegitimate. Mrs. Brown is still living, and in possession of proofs of her marriage.
