'COMMON -SPYING.'

Sidelight on Tariff Enquiry. - ' SYDNEY, May 27.

Before ' the Interstate Commission .re sumed the taking -jf evidence at Pariiattient House this morning, Mr. A'dolf Voigt, of the fiiun of Messrs. Bogs & Vqigr, who

had .given evidence on the previous day, was called by the Chairman .(Mr. Piddinp t-»n, K.C.), to give Jiis version of a convei1 atioti which he had had with Mr. O. C. Beale (managing director of Beale & Co., Limited) in the corridor of Parliament House on Tuesday, in the course of which Mr. Beale was alleged to have accused Ml-. Voigt of 'common spying' during a visit which he had made to Mr. Beale's factory. .Mr. Voigt, through an interpreter, said the Graman equivalent of the words com plained of were used. ' Mr. Beale said that when Mr. Voigt visi ted the factory at Annandale he asked him whether he was there in behalf of the piano importers, who were collecting evi dence for the commission. Mr. Voigt 6aid he did not know anything about a comaniB sion. 'I told him that there was a cdatmis eion of enquiiy sitting, taking evidence with reference to pSanOs,' continued Mr. Beale, 'and that in no circumstances would I show him over the factory if he were going to give evidence before it. Mr. Voight assured me that lie- was no-t collect ing evidence for any one. On that a«ui' once he was sliown over the whole of the factory, and everything was ex plained to Mm, even to costs. In the cor ridor of Parliament House I told Mr. Voigt that he eiid he was not going to give evi dence toefttfe the commiaskm. Mr. Voigt said something about a misunderstanding. I then told him that if he now broke his word lie would be guUty of spying. I now consider that my actions Were untimely, unpremeditated, and unwise, and that 1 tpoke-without reflection, but I will not say th'it it. was not truth.'-. 'Mr. Piddington raid he considered that Mr. Beale's conduct was entirely unworthy, as 'he felt convinced that Mr. Voigt never had the slightest intention of discussing anything that he had eeen in ihe factory, and Mr. Voigt had not .done it. Mr. Beale should express his regret for what had hap pened. ' ? ' f
