CLIFTON HILL BAZAAR. SPEECH BY THE PREMIER A bazaar in aid of the building fund of St. Andrew's Church of England, Clifton Hill, was opened on Saturday afternoon by the State Premier, the Hon. A.J. Peacock, M.L.A., in the Albert hall. There were present the Hon Henry Foster, Messrs. W.D. Beazley, M.L.A., (mayor); E. Wilkins, M.L.A.; F. Tudor, M.H.R.; Counsellor Hooper, and many prominent citizens. The hall was verystastefully decor ated, and thestalls were well supplied, chieBy by free contributions, The Rev E. A. Thomas (vicar of theýchurch) before asking the Premier to open the fair, explained the.reasons why -it was held. The foundations were laid, and they wanted about £8000 (laughter) to complete the adi. fice-; perhaps some noble-hearted donor like .the late Mr Orice woeld come forward and help them on. iHe ex pressed. thanks to 'the ladies who had done: so., much for the bazaar, arid to the Premier,, w.,certanly was not among the uinemployed. He apologised for the absence of Mr Methven and Colonel Reay,-M's.L.A., who were un avoidably absent. Mr Peacock, in a very cheery speech intimated that though he believed in there being no ebtablished church in Victoria, he might say that he was intended for a clergyman, but that. lot had ,fallen to his little brother. (Laughter.) He was sorry to say that Protestants, as a rule, did not support tbheir church and their clergymen as they should. It was his privilege to declare the fair open, and he hoped it would he a thorough success from every pcint of view. - On the motion of 'Cr. Beazley, M.L.A., seconded by Cr Wilkins, M.LA., a vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Peacock for attending to open the bazaar. Three cheers were then given for Mr Peacock, and an addi tion.'l one for Mrs Peacock. The hall became crowded before the Premier oommiencedb'his speech, and business proceeded briskly thereafter.
