MR FRED REBETZKE
Mr Fred. Rebetzke, of Mackay, well-known Mount Morgan citizen of many years ago, employed by the late Mt Morgan Gold Mining Company as shift boss, and a good footrunner and all-round athlete, was some years ago near death's door as a result of arseni- cal poisoning, due to eating apples that had evidently been fumigated with arsenic. A physical wreck, he shunned the society of his fellowmen. Losing all his hair, he lived in the bush and started to live the primitive life. It was not long before a change for the best began to manifest itself. He recovered his strength and his hair began to grow. The hair on his head and beard grew to such length that

when he came into the town of Mackay he was the cynosure of all eyes. He was taken by many, especially the weaker sex, for a "patriarch," and thus treated reverently. Many times he smiled un- der his whiskers whan he saw the look of awe that some of his old-time ac-
quantances gave him as they passed him by.
With steady income from his row of flats and fishing for pleasure in his well kept boat on the river and the outskirts of the Mackay Harbour, he enjoys life. Discarding his flowing beard, but retaining his flowing locks of hair, with his bronzed features, he reminds one of a Redskin American chief.
