£73,000 Spent On 'Smithy'
COST of 'Smithy,' Co lumbia's Austra lian-made film about the late
air ace, Sir Charles Kings ford . Smith, worked out at £400 a day, or a total of £ 73,000. This is about 10 times what the same* direc tor (Ken G. Hall) had to spend on his first' Australian feature, 'On Our Selection.' It made a lot of money locally, but didn't do any thing for Aus tralia's prestige overseas as a j film producing | centre. It was a toss up at one time whether the sub ject would be Smithy or Wil liam Morris Hughes: 'Smithy' won because it was considered more likely to interest the U.S.A.
