CARGO REGULATIONS.
Thc Deputy-Director, Navigation and Lighthouses (Captain N. G. Roskruge ) advises tliat a regulation under thc Commonwealth Navigation Act, which came into force on December 1st, pro- vides that any package or article of cargo of a gross weight of one ton or over, before being loaded on any ship at a Commonwealth port, shall have prominently marked upon it its approx- imate weight in tons and hundred- weights. In the case, however, of cer- tain articles comprised as cargo, such as logs, baulks of timber, etc., of a greater weight thau one ten, but which on account of their uature or place rf shipment it is not practicable to weigh, thc gross weight may be plated approx- imately within a limit of one ton el "Over one but under two tons" or as Hie case may be. The new regulation, which is designed to afford further se- curity against accidents to workers em- ployed in 'loading and unloading ships, has been made in accordance with a
Convention adopted by the General Conference of thc League of Nations. Under this Convention the obligation rests upon thc country from which the goods arc being exported to ensure that thc weights arc marked on the pack-
ages.
