EARTHQUAKES L\ THE SOUTH-EAST.
SE\TiRE SHOCKS.
On Tuesday afternoon our Kingston cor respondent telegraphed:— 'A &har\- shock of earthquake occurred here at I o'clock this afternoon. Xn damaec wan done.'
The following messages were also received by the Postmaster-General early in the af ternoon:— WELLIXGTOX.-Had sharp shock earth quake at 1 p.m. to-day; seemed travelling from tbe sooth. No damage here. ROBE^-At 12J57 a sharp shock of earth quake from southward, with a loud report. No damage.' . KINGSTOX.-Vcry severe shock earth quake here at 1 p.m., lasting about 5 sec; apparently travelling from south-west to north-east. No- damage. Mount Gambier and Beachport also tele graphed that shocks had been fdt, but no damage done. ? ROBE. 2M p.m.— An extremely severe fhock of earthquake occurred at 1±57 to day.- It . commenced like the original shock with thundering* in the distance, and as it grew nearer it .shook everything with treat force People Tan into the streets, ex pecting a repetition of the shock of two years ago, but it gradually passed off. No damage w reported beyond the usual falling of plaster.
