GENERAL ADVANCE BY ALLIES IN KOREA

Reds Pulling Out To New Positions TOKYO (A.A.P.-Reuter). - Troops of the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade and the American 24th Division yesterday advanced more than four miles on the Chong chon . River front. On their flank, troops of the 1st Cavalry Division also moved up more than one mile. The Australians and Argyll Highlanders advanced 4000 yards be yond Pakchon as the steel blue skies and the almost frozen countryside were harbingers of a rapidly appro aching Siberian winter.

U.S. TROOPS, led by tanks, won a bloody three-hour battle yesterday in smashing through a Communist trap, 23 miles south of the Manchurian border. The battle was in a narrow valley, six miles south-west of Kapsan, where the enemy set a trap on the north side of the vil lage of Sogu. Heavy fighting raged yester day for control of the strategic Kunuri-Tokchon road,. south of Chongchon and east of the Chongchon bridgehead area. South Korean troops, who crossed the Taeryong River below Pakchon to take up positions astride the road to Chongju, re ported patrol contacts five miles north-west of Pakchon on the west bank of the Kyejichon River. The Communists on Thursday recaptured a much-contested hill, five miles east of Kunuri on the Chongchon River. United Nations' aircraft re ported that the Communists had built between 10 and 15 road blocks between Yongbyon, 10 miles north-east of Taechon and about 15 miles north of Pakchon, in the eastern part of the penin sula, American Marines reached the lower edge of the Chosin reser voir, near Hagan, and the

American 25th Division, mopping up behind the United Nations lines, reported groups up to 300 Communists south-south-east of Pyongyang. United Nations aircraft strafed i Communist troops and a bridge in the Taechon area, starting some fires. They also attacked a tank south-west of Unsan, where the Communists recently ambushed a cavalry regiment. The aircraft reported that the Communists were gathering five miles north-east of Wonni, in the Chongchon River area, where troops moving along the roads were strafed "with excel lent results."

A message from Seoul says that the U.S. 10th Corps reported yes terday that the Communist front was "breaking" before the hard driving 7th Division. whose tank column was within 20 miles of the Manchurian border. "The North Koreans are aban doning good positions and pulling out towards Kapsan." U.S. Marines clashed with a sizeable Communist force in the mountainous centre of the penin sula. They advanced as much as three miles along the west side of the ice-coated Shangjin reservoir. Troops of the South Korean 2nd Corps stabilised the sagging bottom of the line against strong opposition.
