ROME OF PRINCESS
I
. When Holland's Princess Irene mar- ried French-born Prince Carlos Hugo, 34, in Rome on April 29 she severed herself
from her homeland.
BECAUSE her parents, Queen Juliana of the
Netherlands and Prince Bernhard, would not come to the wedding, there was nobody to give the 24-year-old Princess away.
She was born second in line of succession to the throne of Holland. But her betrothal to a Roman Catholic with pretensions to the Spanish throne and her conversion from Protestantism to his religion caused religious and political controversy in Holland. She renounced her Royal rights.
Princess Irene wore a beautiful Balmain gown and a 200-year-old diamond tiara to her wedding in the Basilica of St. Mary Major.
She spoke to her mother by telephone on her
wedding day, and wept before the ceremony.
During it, she laid her hand gently on her bridegroom's.
The Spanish "Si" she answered for "Yes" was barely a whisper.
