FERRY STRIKE AVERTED. S?YDEY, Thursday. Sydney was last night on the verge of another ferry strike. The employees of the Port Jackson and Manly Steam ship Company, Limited, met at the Trades Hall and related what they regarded as acts of victimisation. A proposal to cease work would pro- bably have been tabled but for an appeal made by their secretary (Mr. A. Carter), who spoke for upwards of two hours, telling the men to banish all ideas of a strike from their minds, and to en- deavour to effect a settlement by peace- ful methods. The complaints of members arose in connection with the dismissal of five old deck hands as part of the programme of reducing the service, while men put on since the recent strike were kept on. The union men took the view that the last to come should be the first to go in any scheme for the shortening of hands. This morning Mr. Carter spent a couple of hours with some of the direc- tors and manager (Mr. Doran). The result was that positions were created for four men and a boy. A promise was also given that the question of the last engaged being the first to go would be discussed by the board later.
