'HOSPITAL MUST GO ON— 'POP'
MR. W. R. ('POP') JOHNSTONE, 84, intends to continue running Australia's smallest 'hospital'
at his St. Johns Wood home, despite the death of his wife last Saturday. In the last 10 years she had been his chief assistant in his voluntary work of ministering to the minor injuries of hundreds of neigh -
bourhood children and adults. Mr. Johnstone, a St John Ambulance bearer for 54 years, built and equipped with his wife's help, a one room 'hospital' at their Piddington Street home in 1944. Since then, the couple had treated about 3000 cuts, bruises, and other minor injuries among the neighbourhood residents. They treated an average of about
20 patients a week. His wife, Mrs. Ethel May Beryl Johnstone, 77, was widely known in Ashgrove, St. John's Wood, and The Gap as 'Mother.'
