LECTURE ON VOLCANOES.
Mr. W. G. Woolnough, B.Sc., F.G.S., gave the fourth and last of his interesting
series of lectures on "Volcanoes" at the ' University last night. On the question-Is there any danger of another volcanic erup- tion in Australia? he said there could be no certainty, but there was a most reas- suring absence of any traces of volcanic action. In the district around Mount Gam- bier and the South of Victoria--the last parts of Australia to be visited by volcanic action--there was no record of hot springs or acid vapours rising. In all probability the volcanoes in Australia were thoroughly extinct, and he did not think there was any need for insurance companies to raise their premiums on account of possible volcanic action in South Australia.
