Sydney, April 8

Forced to flee home with Ann, 3, Terry, 5, because of husband's infidelities, Caddie rents room.

Caddie, right, gets a better-paid job in classier pub, puts kids in church home, meets Greek dress manufacturer, Peter.

Peter (Takis Emmanuel) and Caddie fall in love. But Peter's Greek wife won't join him or divorce him. Caddie sees about a divorce.

lovers. They live together. Jen Peter and children are friends. !o

Caddie is befriended by friendly Rabbito Bill Sutton (Sid Heylan). Later a policeman from the Child Welfare tells her she must go on the dole or lose the children.

On the dole, Caddie feeds the kids, struggles to live, but she collapses from malnutrition. She is rescued by Rabbito Bill, who takes her and kids home. She recovers and gets work.

To support kids, Caddie, 24 (Helen Morse), gets a barmaid's job and is taught by Josie (Jacki Weaver).

SP bookie Ted (Jack Thompson), bar drinker, falls for Caddie. He persuades her to go out with him.

Ted's mistress, Maudie (Lyn Currin), and some friends, warn Caddie off Ted, who calls her Caddie for her classy style, like a Cadillac car.

Peter with Ann (Marianne Howard), Terry (Sean Hinton). But Peter has to go to Greece to dying Dad.

Peter's letters from Greece when he is divorcing his wife keep Caddie happy. It is 1929, the Depression is on, jobs are scarce. Caddie goes from one job to another and rents a run-down house for herself and the children in an inner suburb.

Caddie in a job again takes on SP betting at bar for Paddy (John Ewart). She's successful, evades police by keeping the betting slips up bloomer leg. Life improves, and her divorce is pending.

Caddie has to decide between Peter and the children. Peter, divorced, wants her in Athens, but if she goes

she could lose kids. She stays.
