Floods in India.
Widespread Destruction.
CALCUTTA, August 12.
Further details of the flood show that the town of Bardwan is six feet under water. Of its thirty
thousand inhabitants, only two hun- dred reached the railway station. Terrible loss of life is feared. The
line is submerged for fifteen miles, cutting off communication with Cal- cutta. Many miles of country are flooded, and thousands of people are homeless and starving, their houses having been washed away and their cattle destroyed.
Timely warning enabled thousands to escape from Bardwan. The offici- als employed elephants to drive people to safety.
