DEATH OF THE PRINCE OF MONACO, Prince Charles III, of Monaco has just died at the Chatgeau e Marchais, near Laon, He was born in 1818, and succeeded his father, Prince Florestan I., in 1856. In addition to his Sovereignty of Monaco, he bore the titles of Duke de Valentinois and Peer of France; Duke d' Estouteville, Duke de Mazarin, Duke de la Meillorage, Duke de Mayenne, Prince de Chateau- Porcien of Marquis des Baun, Count de Carladez,, Baron do Buis, Seignour de Saint Remy et de Matignon, Count de Thorigny, Baron de Saint Lo, de la Luhumere, Count de Ferretto, de Belfort, de Thaunend de Resemont, Baron d' Altkirch, Seigneur, d' Irenheim, Marquis de Chilly, Count de Longjumeau, Baron de Many, .Marquis do Guiscard, etc. He was a Grandee of Spain of the lst class, and a Grand Cross of the order of Malta. The Principality of Monaco has belonged to the Grimaldis, Patricians of Genoa; since 968, and passed by the marriage of one of its heiresses to the French house of Goyon-Matignon; to whiph the decease belonged. The majority of the titles cited above were inherited from the marriage one of the Prince's ancestors with M''dlle. Armagnac, daughter of Count d' Armagnac, of the House of Lorraine, Master of the Horse do Louis XIV. The Principality was annexed to France in 1713; but reverted to the Goyon-Matignog-Grimaldi family under the Treaty of Paris of 1814. Prince Charles III. married Princess Antoinette Ghislaine, nee de Mevrille, who died in 1864. He is succeeded by his son Prince Albert Honoro Charles, born on November 13, 1848. The latter, on September 31, 1869, married Princess Marie Victorie, daughter of the late Duke of Hamilton,Brandon and Chatellerault and of Princess Marie, daughter of the late Grand Duke of Baden. The religious marriage was annulled by the Court of Rome in 1886, and the civil marriage dissolved by a decree of the Sovereign Prince in the same year. There was one son, the Crown Prince Louis, issue of the marriage. He was born in 1870. The new Prince of Monaco is well known for his deep sea researches, con- cerning which he furnished numerous com- munications to the Academy of Sciences and to the Reute des Deux Mondes.
