NEW SOUTH WALES PUBLIC
WORKS COMMISSION.
FURTHER EVIDENCE.
(By Telegraph from our Correspondent)
SYDNEY, August 7.
At the sitting of the Public Works Commission to-day, Mr. John Young, contractor, of Annandale, said he re- garded Messrs. Carter and Gummow's tender for contract No. 69 as reckless, and 'it should not have been accepted, as In some particulars it was in such a form as to deceive the department. HeHelp fix this text! considered it tended to open the door to fraud, collusion and chicanery. Some very peculiar information must have been supplied by the department prior to calling for tenders, or there was reck- lessness, or the department was totally 'incompetent. He thought it would be better If the department was abolished altogether. In the tenders for contract No. 77 there was a difference of only 3 per cent between those of Mr. 'M'Sweeney and Messrs. Carter, Gum mow, and Co., and yet he considered the prices reckless.
Thomas Williams, contractor, said that one of the reasons why lie drew Mr. Varney Parkes's attention to the matter now under investigation was because one of the partners of Carter, Gummow, and Co. told him he intended to tender so low that the Monier system would be accepted. He was also told that the firm would make a lot of money out of the contract. From his own experience he did not think he would have a show of getting a contract from the depart-
ment.
Prior to the commission adjourning,
Mr. Davies, of the Public Works De- partment, complained that some one had been down the Glebe sewers, and had removed the cement and made holes in the compo material. Judge Murray 3aid no one had authority to go down the sowers, and he hoped if the police saw anyone interfering with the man- holes they would be run in.
The commission then adjourned.
