AflR. 31IILD. lion. Bolton Stafford Bird, M.IAL., who once again finds himself in Parliament, was born in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, in 1840, and at the age of 13 came with his parents to Australia. Portion of the time after his arrival was spent in Vic toria, where he entered the church, leav ing the colony in 1874 to occupy the pas torate of IPavey-strect Congregational Church, Hobart. Here he remained until 1870, when lie retired into private life, following agricultural pursuits upon the banks of the liunn, below Shipwright's Point. In 1883 lie entered political life, and was returned to the Assembly as the representative of the district in which he lived. His debating power soon brought him to the front, and on the election of Hon. A. Dobson as Speakrer Mr. Bird be came the right hand of the late Sir Ed ward B3raddon, who hail succeeded to the position of leader of the Opposition. In 1887 Mr. Bird accepted the position of Treasurer in the Pysh Administration. Subsequently he acted as Speaker for a period of three years, but was replaced by the late liou. N. J. Brown. Mr. Bird succeeded Sir Elliott Lewis as leader of the Opposition, in which capacity he mov. ed the resolution that proved fatal to the Braddon Government, and subsequently served as Treasurer in she Lewis Adminis-. tration. With his leader, Mr. Bird lost his seat at the last general election, when every Minister in the Assembly went to the wall before the popular cry for reform and retrenchment.
