CITY POLICE COURT.

Monday, January 11.

Before Mr. P. Pinnock, P.M., and J. Walters, J.P. '

Minor Offencess :-Three persons charged with drunkenness were discharged on paying the amount expended in convoying them to the lockup. Josephine Thornton, a respectably dressed woman, 31 years of age, was fined 5s. and Maria Billson, aged 53, was lined £1 or in default imprisonment till the rising of the

court.

Vagrancy :- John Tisson, alias Jas. Tyson, a

native of New South Wales, was charged with . having no lawful means of support. Detective Johnston, who made the arrest, said that on Saturday he saw the accused in the office of Messrs. Sealy, Snell, and Mosman. Detective Bowen was also there and asked the accused   to go with him to the Detective Office. On his arrival there he was arrested as a vagrant. In reply to Johnston, the accused said he had plenty of money. At this stage Sub-inspector O'Driscoll applied for a remand, but Mr. Pinnock said that before granting it he would like to know more of the case. The accused   saved further trouble, however, by pleading guilty. It seemed that Tisson had been deal- ing pretty extensively in horses on Saturday, and that he paid for the same by cheque. It was in connection with those transactions that the remand was asked, and it was eventually granted, the accused being remanded for a week. Margaret Kavanagh, an Irishwoman, 38 years of age, was also charged as a vagrant. She was sent to the Magdalen Asylum.

Obscene Language:- Margaret Doyle, alias Bridget Sheehan, charged with having used obscene language within the hearing of persons passing at New Farm, was fined £5, with the alternative of one month's imprisonment.

Fowl Strauso.-The man William J. Cox again appeared on remand in answer to a charge of fowl stealing. It will bo remembered that several geese which had made their escape from the yard of a dealer in Boma-street were ïound in Cox's possession. This morning Mr. Pinnock addressing the accused said, " I've considered your case Cox, you are fined £1 or one month's imprisonment." The fine was paid.

EMnr.m.EMKNT. - Laurence Hogan, a Queenslander, 20 years of age, was charged with having embezzled the sum of £2 2s., the property of Messrs. Thomas Bryce and Co., carriers, Adelaide-streot, by whom he had boen employed as carter. Detective Toomey gave

evidence to the effect that he had arrested tho accused on Saturday afternoon. The accused

was remanded lill Friday next on the appli- | cation of Sub-inppector O'Driseoll. Bail was applied for, but was refused.

DisoiuiKuuv Conduct.-.Tame1? M'Cullotigh, a Queenslander, 20 years of age, pleaded guilty to having conducted himself 'in a disorderly manner in Eoma-streot, and was fined 10s., with the alternativo of twelve hours in the cells.

Sttjaling a Passage.-Michael O'Connor, an Irishman, 30 years of age, pleaded guilty to the charge of having illegally obtained a pas- sage from Sydney to Brisbane in the steamship Fitzroy. When asked if ho had anything to say the accused said ho had had a few " nips" in him or he would not have been there, and when he discovered his mistake the steamer was so far out from the wharf that he did not Uko to " try to jump ashore." Ho was finod £l,and was ordered to pay £110s., the amount of tho passage money, or seven days' imprison-

ment in default.

BREAKING INTO. - Alfred Warner on remand was charged with having on the 28th December, broken into the blacksmith's shop of John O'Neill, of Normanby, and stolen therefrom two springs and an axle belonging to a spring cart. Sub-inspector O'Driscoll appeared to prosecute, and Mr. P. J. O'Shea appeared for the defendant. The case had been closed for the prosecution, and the defendant having been formally charged made a statement to the effect that Jackson and O'Neill had undertaken to make a cart for some hawkers, and having no cart to lend the hawkers whilst the new one was being made the accused generously offered the blacksmiths the loan of his. The offer was accepted with thanks and soon afterwards the blacksmiths, instead   of lending the cart to the hawkers, proceeded to break it up and make a dogcart out of it for their own use. Hearing of this the accused went to the shop, and on Jackson, who was present, pointing out the springs and axle of the cart to him and telling him to take them out of the shop he did so, and hence the trouble. This statement was borne out by two witnesses, and the accused was discharged.

Su.mmonb'Carki.-Thomas Smith summoned Alfred Hughes for having assaulted him. Mr. Lukin (instructed by Messrs.'Lilley and O'sul- livan) appeared for the plaintiff, aud Mr. Thynne for the defendant. After hearing evi- dence the bench dismissed the case. Thomas Smith summoned the same defendant for using threatening languago towards him. De- fendant was ordered to enter into his own re- cognisance-in £10 to keep tho peace for six months, and was adjudged to pay £1 1b. pro- fesional costs. In the case of Thomas Laidlaw v. Charles Handle for assault Mr. Jodrnll nppeared for tho complainant. The defendant was fined £2, with Gs. öd. costs of court, los. witnesses' expenses, and £1 Is, pro- fessional costs, or one month's imprisonment in default. Leah Morton summoned William Mooro for having assaulted her Bon, Walter Morton, with a whip. Mr, Lukin (instructed by Mr. Winter) appeared for the complainant, and Mr. J. R. Baxter Bruce for the defendant, who was lined £1, with 4s. öd. costs of court, £1 Is. professional costs, and 10s. witnesses' expenses, or fourteen days' imprisonment in default. He was allowed seven days in which to pay the fine on his entering into a bond of £5. Mrs. Morton summoned the same defen- dant for making use of insulting language towards her. For this offence he was finod £1, with 4s. Gd. costs of court, 5s. for the atten- dance of one witness, and £1 Is. professional costa, or fourteen days' imprisonment in de- fault. He was also allowed time in which to pay this fine.
