Walking along an American country road (says tho New York correspondent of the S. üf. Herald) ono not infrequently meets a house moving on rollers to some new site ; and in cities, of courso, there have been many examples of the same thing on a grand scale. But by far the grandest effort of the kind ever made has just been successfully completed at Coney Island. For several years the sea had been makirfg inroads on the land, and it be- came evident that a season or two more would bring the waves to the spot where the large summer Hotel, known as the Brighton Beach House, had been erected. The building was .IGOft. long-, with an average depth of 170ft., and was six stories high. The founda- tion was of 6tone, and the upper floors of wood. What was to be dono to save it from being swallowed up by the Atlantic Oceun ? A local builder cheerfully undertook the contract to move it back a few hundred feet and at once set to work. First, ha put screws under the hotel foundations and lifted it bodily up in the air. Ho then built a number of short parallel railroad tracks and managed to deposit the hotel on a combination of 112 specially constructed platform cars. And then lastly, half-a-dozen locomotives rinvultuneously tugged at the cars, the pulleys and ropes being inge- niously arranged to concentrate the strain at tho proper points; and, to the delight of several thousand spectators, the monster hotel moved forward as a wholo on the desired course. The total weight is estimated at about 5000 tons, and the removal was consummated with- out the slightest apparent injury in any way to any part of the hotel. Not even a glass in the
bar was broken.
