FIRES AT MAYLANDS.
Four Outbreaks on Railway.
Four times within 16 hours to 8 a.m. yesterday the Maylands -Fire Brigade had to suppress fires on the railway line within a space of about half a mile. On
three occasions the site of the nre was the wooden traffic bridge over the rail; way at Seventh-avenue, Maylands. On Monday afternoon some timber around the bridge was afire, and bush and scrub in a large vacant allotment adjacent also were burning, threatening surrounding property. The outbreak was extinguished with two lines of hose. Soon after/ tie firemen had returned to .their station, they were called out again to extinguish a fire among the sleepers lining a railway cut ting about half a mile west of the Seventh avenue bridge. Later, another fire occur red in the bridge, but in a portion so far removed from the previous occurrence that it is not believed to have /been a con sequence of the original fire. This was quelled easily before it had got a hold. About 8 a.m. yesterday the brigade had to return to the bridge and put Cut an other fire which apparently originate! from the first. The fires are attributed to. sparks from passing locomotives.
