BROLHOS GUANO.
ROLHOS GUANO.
The Government Surveyor having ha ed us sealed duplicates of 22 representative samples of ABEOLHOS GUANO taken hy him. we forwarded same to Mr. JOHN HUGHES, Agricultural Analyst, of 79 Mark-lane, London, E.C., for EXAMINATION and REPORT.
The following is a typical analysis hy this well-known authority:
Water (lost at 212deg. fall.) ... 9"00 Organic matter and combined
water. 18"80 f »Phosphoric acid. 26*65
Lime . 34"66
"[Carbonic acid. T10 Oxides of iron, alumina, alka-
lies, magnesia, etc. 7'73
Sand . 1-46
100-00
.Equal to phosphate of lime ... 58'17 JEqual to carbonate of lime ... 2*50
(Sample sealed A. J. WELLS, Licensed Sur
cyor.
Mr. Hughes goes on to say :
"The agricultural value of ABROLHOS GUANO is now well recognised, and depends upon its richness in PHOSPHATE OF LIME, which, though not soluble iu water, is, I find, gradually dissolved by vegetable acids such as citric acid. Consequently on rich vegetable or peaty soils this guano can be USED AS IT IS without any cheinicil treatment) with advan- tage as manure for root crops; also, upon grass lands deficient in lime and where the quality of the herbage is coarse and rank, and, therefore, not at present of much use either for cattle or sheep. The effect of this guano on such grass land will be found very beneficial, as it will improve and insrease the growth of the finer grasses."
(Signed),
JOHN HUGHES, Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry
Member of the Society of Public Analysts Consulting Chemist to the Ceylon Coffee
Planters' Association
District Agricultural Analyst for Here-
fordshire. »
We may add that the mean results of the whole 22 samples were 58*7 per cent, of phos- phate of lime. When phospbatic manures are required, it has been proved that ABROLHOS GUANO will give results equal to the best bonedusts and on a par with most phosphatic
fertilisers.
