NORTHAM NEWS.
THREE DEATHS.
TRAFFIC TO SOUTHERN CROSS.
[By Telegraph.]
(From our Correspondent.)
Northam, Feb. 27.
Death has been very busy here this week. I have to record tbe, death of the only son of Mr. John Byfield, who was killed by a fall from a horse ; of Mr. M. Lynch, who died at Slater's Hotel yesterday; and also of Mrs. Biddle, who died after a few days' illness of bowel complaint, caused by over-indulgence in fruit, probably unripe. Great sympathy is felt for the various friends concerned in these bereavements.
Teams continue te leave for Yilgarn, but under tremendous difficulties for water, half their loading being made up of the precious
fluid.
In common with the rest of the colony, great regret is expressed here at the death of Mr. J. H. Monger, who here was well known, much esteemed, and very popular. I cannot wish his sons a more honourable career than that of their widely-respected father.
Trade generally is quiet, and a dall winter's trade may be looked forward to throughout the colony. Fortunately the energetic policy of the Government will go far to neutralise the effects of the late bad season. Though some may differ from this policy, I am of opinion that the coming winter will prove its wisdom, when the Government saw and hammer will be heard in every district in the colony ; and this timo next year, if we are blessed with a good season, will still more emphatically prove the wisdom cf the public works policy of the present Government. Meanwhile, it will be well for private enterprise to work with
caution.
