INQUESTS BEFORE THE CITY CORONER.
Ait inquest was held on Tuesday, at the Superin- tendent's office, Cockatoo Island, before a jury of twelve, composed af soldiers, constables, and prisoners, on view of the body of Edward Sutcliffe, a prisoner of the Crown, aged thirly-soven years. Deceased was received on tho island ia Jone, 1857, under sentence of three years for an indecent assault. He was pnt under hospital treatment on Wednesday of last week, and suffered from pain in the stomach, attended with vomiting. An ordinary emetic was given by the dispenser, and afterwards five successive doses of ten grains of calomel with an addi- tion of two drops of croton oil. These powerful means not acting,
every four hours. There was tympanitis, and no motion of the bowels took place. Orders wera left with the attendant, by the dispenser, for giving calomel and opium during the night, and this was ac- cordingly dore-as much os 36 grains of calomel com- bined with 12 grains of opium being given. Tho pulse waa down to £0 on Thursday morning ; .thc vomiting had ceased ; and the bowels continued unrelieved. An active saline aperient was then given every two hours, composed of tartar emetic and Epsom salts, and a hot bath ordered every two hours. The bowels were still unmoved, «nd an injection was employed every two hours, and the abdomen rubbed with croton oil lini- ment. None of the remedies the dispenser employed had the slightest effect up to Friday morning, and the injections were repeated at regular intervals. He gave him ten grains calomel with two drops croton oil, and afterwards, seeing the vomiting likely to re- turn, he gave him two grains of calomel and' a half grain of opium. During thc night the deceased strained much, and the perineum and scro- tum were very much swollen. Deceased complained of suppression of urine, and the dispenser relieved him by the usual means. On Saturday his bowels were still unrelieved, and he suffered much and had an anxious countenance with, hiccough. He
u placed in a warm bath, and Dr. West being sent for, whim about 9 o'clock, and ordered soap lojeetions bc repeated every four hours, with spirit lotion ap- plied to the scrotum, and a continuance of the calomel and opium. These orders were carried out. De- ceased was no better on Saturday morning, and the vomiting returned. tongue was leia coated, and there was a delirious appearance ; the opium waa stopped and coninm (a milder sedative) substituted ¡ on Monday the vomiting returned ; and " in spite of ell endeavours," deceased expired about ten o'clock on that day.
Thomas Elston, foreman of works, deposed to the fact of the deceased's indisposition ; he had known him as having come to the colony as a prisoner of thc Crown, and became free by servitude.

1 death. By the Coroner : " There was no indiges , tibie matter in the stomach, and I think the treatment, I with the exception of the emetic, was very proper." ! After a full and careful investigation, which lasted for
several hours, the jury returned a verdict of died from natural causes. They regretted that Dr. West did not

A second inquest was held at Cockatoo, on Tuesday, n view of the body of John Martin, alias Joe Bean, a ion ot colour, nativo of the West Indies, aged thirty ix years. Deceased had been placed under treat- ment in, the hospital for bronchitis. After he had been iu the hospital about a week he wu attacked with liver, complaint and enlargement of the abdomen.
Both complaints made rapid progress, end he died on : Monday evening. He had been in the hospital twenty five days, and Dr. Weit had seen him about six times. Verdict-natural causes. Deceased was received on the island ln~ September," 1857, under a three years' sentence, for stealing clothirj£.
