Salvage Race On Wrecked Cargo
SYDNEY, Thursday.^
Prospects of salvaging "the 7090-ton British freighter, Em- pire Gladstone, were described to-night as being "very remote."
The Empire Gladstone ran aground on Haystack Rock, nine miles north of Eden ori the South Coast of N.S.W., early on Tues- day night.
A survey to-day revealed that the "freighter's bottom was ripped out from the bow to the bridge.
Shipping experts say>that even if the ship were floated it would probably Sink.
The Empire Gladstone waa carrying a cargo of about 9000
tons of Iron ore and about 140 motor car and truck bodies. She was on her way from 'Whyalla to Sydney. . \ l>
Local fishermen say that the freighter will never be1 salvaged.
Meanwhile, a desperate ' race against time while' the weather remains fine is being carried out to salvage the motor car and truck bodies from the ship.
Trawlers working throughout to-day managed to take 17 of the bodies to a jetty at Merim- bula, four and a half miles away from the ship.
Two more trawlers from Ulla- dulla and three from Eden reached Merimbula to-night and will take part in the salvage
work to-morrow.
The crew of 44 is remaining on board the vessel. %
