rrHKRE arc 100 jobs for
*- trained social workers go- ing begging throughout Aus- tralia, according to Miss Norma Parker, Director of Social Studies at Sydney Uni- versity. Of these 40 are in
"Amongst the organisations wanting social workers are Red Cross, Legacy, Child Guidance Clinics, the Crippled Children's Society, Y.W.C.A., municipal playgrounds, thc Immigration De- partment, and the Common- wealth Department of Social Ser- vices," Miss Parker said.
Site added that public hospitals were short of 15 almoners (social workers with an additional year's
training in medical social work).
"There is keen competition for the Social Studies graduates of Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide univci'ftitics." said Miss Parker. "Thc other States and New Zea- land are all looking to these train- ing centres for social workers. Jn Queensland, for instance, lhere arc 12 vacant jobs."
Miss Parker said the Sydney University course in Social Studies was a two-year diploma course. Jn their second year students could specialise in social case work or group work.
"Australian - trained social workers have done well over- seas," she added. "Mr. Don Peterson, a Sydney graduate who did outstanding work at Egham Rehabilitation Centre in England, was recently appointed by thc Home Office to take charge of probation services in Hong Kong. A Melbourne graduate, Miss Viva Murphy, holds an important post with the Australian Legation in New York, giving an information and counselling service to Ameri- cans interested in migrating to Australia."
